Tips For Buying a Quality Benchtop Planer

Benchtop planers, also called depth planers or surface planers, are small, special-purpose wood working machines which are primarily used to cut the depth of a wood veneer or wooden project piece. The secondary function of a benchtop planer also is to get a nice finished surface on a completed wooden piece once a wooden veneer has been cut. These planers are available for any price range, from the affordable to the more expensive. Most benchtop planer machines use metal rollers that are mounted on a cabinet-like stand to extend from the machine to the veneer surface.

There are many different types of benchtop planer available today. Some are powered electrically and some are cordless. Most benchtop planers are of the electric variety. They generally are powered by a standard 15 amp motor. Most are in single and two-seat configurations. A two-seat benchtop planer has the capacity to cross the width of two regular workpieces, but can only fit into a normal-sized veneer or square.

Most benchtop planer machines are built with safety features such as dual dust collectors. The dust collector can either be located on the front of the planer, behind the feed roller, or on the rear, inside the cabinet. When the dust collector is located on the rear of the machine, it is highly visible and may not be as comfortable to look at as a front-facing system. To prevent the machine from being overloaded with dust particles, set the dust collection efficiency to its highest setting.

Although most benchtop planer machines have powerful motors, they do not operate at full speed. The motor needs time to revolve and cool down. The motor is also not protected from shock or damage by a cord. This means that you will need an extension cord to operate your benchtop planer. An extension cord should be easily accessible so that you do not have to lug around an extension cord.

Some of the most common types of wood or composite planters on the market today are Veneers and Splitting planes. Veneers are popular because they are readily available and they require no continuous power cord. They are more fragile than cutting planes and they are not appropriate for all applications. Veneers are generally used to cover large areas. Splitting planes are excellent choices for small to medium-sized jobs.

A Benchtop Planer can incorporate two techniques commonly used by craftsmen – infeed and infill. If you plan on using wood chips for surface dressing, then the infeed technique is the best choice for you. You simply pull up a sleeve, place the wood chips in the cavity, insert the blade and cut. The downside to using wood chips is that if the chip dust and pieces of wood dust escape into the air, it will create a mess and you will need to clean the air out of the chipper frequently.

It is important that you buy a benchtop planer that has a good warranty. Warranties provide peace of mind that the manufacturer has not abandoned the machine due to an unforeseen defect. Companies that guarantee their machines will offer different terms of warranty ranging from a few months to a few years. You should also consider the warranty period when purchasing power tools.

A benchtop planer that has a higher feed rate will cost more, but you will get more coverage with each stroke. The higher the feed rate, the less likely it is that you will miss hitting something when using the machine. The rule of thumb is that the lower your feed rate, the less likely you are to make mistakes. Hitches are inevitable, and you can reduce them by following the tips above.
