Selecting the Right Chainsaw Chain

The chain saw, also known as the “chain” or “braking chain,” is a vital component of a chainsaw to the extent that it must be maintained, if it is to work properly. It most often consists of several steel links welded together at the “spokes” (notches) of each chain link, and resembles the bicycle-style chain wheel, but it’s much closer in configuration to a real bicycle chain. This article will explain how to care for your chainsaw chain and why it’s important to do so.

Most chainsaws in use today have a steel chain with eight to ten links at the spindle ends, arranged in what’s known as an “L-shape.” In older models, the number of links was set by a set amount of tooth marks at the lower end of the bar; when these numbers increased, the number of teeth allowed increased. The more teeth a chainsaw chain has, the longer it can theoretically run. The ideal length is somewhere around forty five inches, as this is about midway between the length of the carbide chain (inner ring) and the length of the wooden bar.

How do you tell if your chainsaw chain is in proper operating condition? There are two indicators that you can look for. The first of these is the height of the chain above the bar. If the chain is too long, it may bind up against the bar too tightly, resulting in ineffective cutting. If the chain is too short, it may struggle to get through the bar and cause it to slip off.

Other things to check include the feel of the chain and the quality of the teeth on both ends of the bar. The feel of the chain is a result of how the teeth themselves are arranged. A semi chisel chain will tend to feel more like a standard chain as the teeth are closer together. On the other hand, the teeth of semi chisel chains can be closer together than standard chains, but closer to the edges of the bar.

For chainsaw chainsaws with standard or full skip chains, you have two options. You can either buy new chain and cutters from your local dealer, or you can order a full skip chain online. Both methods work perfectly fine. The important difference between the two is that, with the full skip chain, you will most likely be cutting your own chain rather than buying it. When you order a full skip chain online, make sure that you specify that you mean a full chain rather than a half or quarter chain.

The other important difference between the two chains is the gauge of the cutting bars. If you’re just starting out and cutting your own chains, it’s easy enough to just go with a lower grade. In the long run though, higher grade chains will perform better and hold up better to use. Gauge refers to the number of bars that make up one complete looping cycle. The higher the number of bars, the stronger the chain.

The next issue to address is kickback. This term simply refers to the angle at which the chain digs into the wood. At high speeds, the chain digges closer to the wood, which results in more kickback. At lower speeds, the chain digs closer to the wood and has a longer distance back from the wood. The angle in between these two factors is referred to as the kickback angle, and it’s what determines how fast the chain will dig. It’s best to start out with a milder angle (so the chain doesn’t dig as far into the wood) and then slowly increase the kickback angle as you get more experienced.

One last thing to discuss is the effect of cross-linking on the carbide chain. Cross-linking occurs when there are stray carbon fibers left within the carbide. The carbon fiber, trapped by the side of each cut, causes a reaction in which the carbide “bends” back into the saw’s teeth. While the effects of cross-linking are generally minimal on standard chainsaws, it can be an issue on carbide chainsaws.
