Deck Screws – Plastic Versus Stainless Steel Build Quality

If you’re building a new deck or repairing an existing one, it’s important to know which deck screws to choose. Galvanized, stainless steel, or plastic deck screws are ideal corrosion resistant fasteners for use with pressure-treated redwood or cedar. The following will walk you through what to look for in a deck screws guide for next year while constructing an outdoor structure or deck at the beginning of the next year. For more information on deck screws, read the following before construction begins.

To ensure the highest quality deck screws, always buy them from a reputable company with a good reputation. Before purchasing deck screws of any kind, identify whether the materials being used have been treated with a water repellant or pressure wash. Galvanized screws and fasteners that have been treated with either of these techniques are much more resistant to corrosion than untreated materials. Also, galvanized screws and fasteners will require minimal maintenance over the life of the project.

Today’s most popular variety of threaded fasteners is made from either brass or chrome. Brass is typically used in high-end applications where high quality, appearance, and durability are desired. Chrome-plated deck screws may be used for general applications and do not require the detailed care and upkeep that brass-bodied threaded fasteners require. These fasteners can also be used in wood decking because wood composes a higher percentage of natural grease that can reduce friction, extending the life of the fastener.

Deck screws that are made from brass are available in different thread counts and should really be inspected before purchase. Look at the number and diameter of each threads and determine how much force is applied to the threads when the screws are under load. Also look at how tightly the threads are seated into the wood, and measure the distance between the threads. If a screw will be used frequently in a specific area such as a brake strip, then the diameter and threads will need to be larger so that excess force is evenly distributed throughout the area of use.

With new deck screws, you can pre-drill all of the holes to which the screws will pass. This is a simple process that ensures that the screws go in the right places and are properly seated into the wood. However, there are some older wooden projects in which the holes may not have been pre-drilled, in which case it is best to pre-drill all of the holes. The pre-drilling process makes it easier to seat the screws in the wood and minimizes slippage.

There are three varieties of deck screws that are used in residential and commercial applications: brass, chrome-plated steel, and pre-drilled steel. Brass is one of the most popular options because of its high level of quality and relative low price. However, compared to stainless screws, brass tend to rust more easily and require a higher degree of maintenance. A significant downside to brass is its tendency to form a rusted patina over time if it is not treated with an appropriate lubricant.

A third variety of deck screws, chrome-plated steel, tends to be more durable and resistant to corrosion than other metals. While it does tend to be a bit higher priced than other options, the increased durability combined with a relatively low cost to purchase and install means that this type of wood screw is really well suited for both industrial and residential applications. This makes it one of the better solutions when considering durability versus price.

All of the above examples highlight the difference between a plastic threaded screw and a stainless steel or chrome-plated screw. In terms of appearance, plastic threads tend to look a lot less attractive than stainless steel build quality, chrome plated screws, and the like. This makes plastic-threaded deck screws a better option for applications where appearance is not as important as function. As with all screws, you should ensure that you pick a brand of screws that you can rely on and that will last a long time. Remember to buy only high quality materials so that you get good results.
