Fescue Grass Seed

So you are looking to start raising a new crop of herb garden plants and want to know what exactly the best grass seed is? You’re not alone, many people aren’t sure which is the most superior variety and end up with a mixture of the two. I have no idea why that happens but I also don’t have the answer to your question. What I do know is that there are various factors that will contribute to determining the most effective grass seed. Here are the most important ones:

So what happens if you don’t have any fertile soil in your backyard that can support a garden grass? You could have the best looking yard in the world but it won’t matter if you have no soil to grow your seed in. Fescue grass seed takes well to almost any type of soil but you do need to keep in mind that sandy soils may require different amounts of fertilizer. Soil that is slightly rocky will also provide a good growing environment for your seeds.

If you are planning on a raised bed garden, the type of soil will be an important factor when deciding the right grass seed for your planting area. For example, if you live in a rocky area with clay soil, you would want to avoid a rocky/clay soil mix as your seed wouldn’t thrive. Clay is much more work for the roots when they grow. On the flip side, if you live in a well drained field then you may be able to use whatever type of soil you wish to plant your grass in.

Another thing to consider is the time of year that you are planning on planting your new grass. While it’s true that cool weather does nothing for your fescue grass seed, it is also the case that warmer weather does not do as well. If you have an area that gets a lot of sun in the summer then you may not have to worry about shade during the winter.

How is the climate in your region? Will your fescue grass seed germinate in the cold or in the heat? Different climates have different needs. The colder the months, the longer the seeds need to soak in the cold to germinate. This is also true for the warmer weather. It just takes longer for the seeds to germinate in the heat.

The moisture level in the soil is another consideration for any type of grass seed. You don’t want your seed to sit there and dry out, nor do you want it soaking wet. Depending upon where you live, the humidity level may not warrant any extra attention in the early spring, but in the late summer or fall, you may want to lightly mist the area with water just to keep it moist enough to allow for a germination.

What type of soil will you be working with? This should be an easy question to answer. If you have hard clay soil, it will be more challenging to grow grass, but not impossible. Clay soils tend to get a little sandy after they are tilled, so if you don’t like that type of yard work, you may want to skip it. On the flip side, if you have soft soil, it may very well work.

When you have the answers to these basic questions, it should be time to start researching exactly what you want to grow and where you want to plant. Fescue grass seed can be found in a multitude of different colors and varieties. Some are annuals, some perennials, while others grow for only one season. Just be sure to choose the species that best suits your landscape and climate.
