Understanding Paint Primer

Whether you are a residential painter or a commercial painters, paint protection is an important skill for every kind of painter. If you are painting a wooden surface, applying primer coat helps protect it from damages and prolong its durability. Some of the most important things to consider when applying primer coat to a wooden surface are its vulnerability to damage, its smoothness and glossiness, its colorfast property and its resistance to weather conditions. It is a must that you follow these steps before painting.

To start with, you need to prepare your painting surface by cleaning it properly. Primer coat usually comes in three basic types – latex, acrylic and water-based. All the three types have their own advantages and disadvantages. For latex primer, latex gloves are required because its properties include mildew; hence, it is not advisable to apply it to a polished metal surface. Acrylic primers do not require gloves but are not recommended for home applications because of its tendency to drip.

Before applying a paint primer, pre-prime the surface by applying some oil or grease primer. The primer will provide a smooth finishing and protect the painting surface. You can also opt for latex primer wherein a ‘base’ coat is applied first, followed by the color-matched primer. However, the primer coat is not necessary; you can skip it if you want a fast drying and a high gloss finish. Before using any of the three types of primer, you should determine which one suits your painting needs best.

You need to prepare a variety of tools for painting the interior and exterior rooms in your house. You must have paint brushes (and preferably, several), drop cloths and sponges for removing grime and dust from surfaces as well as rags for cleaning the interior surfaces. You may also need rollers and tape measure. Do a visual inspection of your interior before you purchase or rent a paint primer. The best types are those that are non-transferring. These will preserve the original color of the walls and other interior and exterior decorations.

An undercoat helps your paint primer stick to your painted surface. It also improves the bond between the two surfaces. There are two kinds – a light undercoat and a dark undercoat. A light undercoat provides a glossy look to your painting. On the other hand, a dark undercoat gives a matte finish to your painted work.

Before applying your paint primer, read the instructions provided with your product. Undercoats can be prepared by applying an overcoat of either medium or paint thinner. This preparation process penetrates deep into the paint to prepare a smooth, glossy and durable topcoat. It also improves adhesion between the two topcoats. You may choose to do a test-brush application to check the condition of your applied topcoat.

After preparing the surfaces to be painted, make sure that they are completely clean and dry. If there are stubborn stains, try to remove them using a mild abrasive material. Then use a rag or brush to remove any loose debris that was left behind during the removal process. Use chemical strippers for tough stains to remove them completely.

Painting metal may be a daunting task especially if you don’t have enough experience. If you are not very confident with your metal painting techniques, you should get some help from professional painters. They would provide you with advice on how to paint your metal surfaces. They usually start with the basic coats of metal primer. These coats provide the base coat and the metallic shine that enhances the painting process.
