Pocket Knives

A pocket knife is usually a small folding knife with one or several blades which fold into the handle. It is sometimes called a tanto or a paring knife, although a tanto is not a special type of pocket knife, and no matter what the name, a paring knife will have a blade of some sort protruding from the handle. Most paring knives have a length of about five to 15 centimetres, although a typical blade length is around 6 centimetres. Most modern paring knives have a clip or an opening on the side which allows the user to simply pull the knife out of their pocket and use it.

An innovative addition to the design of many pocket knives was the creation of the pusher. The pusher allowed the blade to be opened by pulling it out of the pocket. This made the knife much easier to carry because it required less strength to open it. Early pocket knives such as the Victorinox knives would have no opening on the handles; this meant that the knife could only be used if the blade was inside the pocket. American knife makers had the foresight to soon change this, and began creating knives which would easily be opened without opening the handles.

There are three main types of folding knives in modern times. The first is the general purpose utility knife. The second is the concealable folder, and the third is the Swiss army knife. General purpose folders are designed for every day use, such as chopping, dicing, flicking, and meat tenderizing. concealable folder knives are usually designed to be used in concealed places and for protection. Swiss army knives are designed for use in combat and for use in sensitive or difficult situations.

The Swiss army knife became famous in World War II, when the soldiers brought their pocket knives along. These knives were reinforced with metal frames and included a leather scabbard. The Swiss army knife has evolved to include other tools such as a pocket clip and a sheath.

The Japanese created the first pocket knives to be used by the general public. The first of these was the katana, which dates back to the 6teenth century, and was made from a single-bladed sword with a handle made from wood. Another Japanese knife, the jojimamite, dates back even earlier, but its blade has not been found until today.

Some of the earliest examples of pocket knives can be found in the works of Japanese artist Usui Kensho. Among the most popular swords that he used were the Wakizashi (eight-foot), Wakizashi (six-foot), Tanto (three-foot), and the Bancho (two-foot). Most of the time, he used two-pound blades, but some of his swords were three pounds. The jojimamite, the five-foot Wakizashi, and the six-foot Tanto are among the heaviest among his known knives, although he could have used larger Wakizashi blades.

In modern times, most pocket knives have a double-edged blade and a locking mechanism. A two-stone lock is used on many models. The Japanese often use a nine-volt locking mechanism, but American manufacturers are following suit. These locking blades are made with a thumb turn to open the blade, but American manufacturers have adopted a side opening method. The lock-blade knives are also referred to as “thumb flints,” as only a finger can open them.

The traditional shape for most pocket knives was that of a pocket knife, with a short handle and a strong point. Today’s Victorinox knives are similar to these older designs. The Victorinox company began making knives in the 1890s and has come a long way. They are still a household name when it comes to quality products, including pocket knives, and the quality of the Victorinox knives that are manufactured today is better than ever.
