Primer for Cabinets

The most important element of any paint job for kitchen cabinets is primer. Primer protects your cabinets from initial damage by locking in moisture. They also hide stains, and when you apply the final touch-up paint topcoat, your finished look truly shines. Hence, it’s critical to have a good primer before you start a paint project.

Many paint specialists recommend applying primer before using a color or style guide. This helps you create a smooth and even surface and reduces risk of an uneven finish. However, you can always go in for a color or style guide, if you want a more defined outcome. Experts maintain that there are three technical features that determine how much time should be spent on priming and painting.

Firstly, there are two types of technical features – known as static adhesion and dynamic adhesion. static adhesion bond only to itself and does not allow movement; dynamic adhesion permits interchangeability of parts and their surfaces; and a mixture of the two, known as anisimetric, allows for movement but is much slower. This ensures a better bond with kitchen cabinets. Static adhesion is usually used for cheaper products where a little extra time will help achieve a professional finish.

Secondly, there is sanding and buffing. Although it may sound like two separate processes, both involve priming and sanding of surfaces. The role of sanding is to remove a very thin layer of finish over surfaces to prepare them for the final coat of paint. Buffing is often used to repair small dents and scratches.

So how do you know when to use one or the other? Well, in general, the best primer is one that does not need to be primed at all. It is left to dry overnight and sanded during the day. Static primers generally produce the best paint and can give kitchen cabinets an appealing “flat” finish. They do not need to be primed at all.

A gloss or semi-gloss primer can provide a flat surface for bare wood surfaces like floors, table tops and cabinet faces. The term semi-gloss means that some of the gloss is not visible once the stain has dried. This gives a smoother, less shiny effect. In the past, using a dull primer would hide small scratches on painted surfaces. However, today’s more sophisticated epoxies and varnishes offer far more protection against damage.

When it comes to flat surfaces like countertops and kitchen cabinets, a medium-coverage is best. This gives a somewhat glossy, non-flat finish and is easy to apply with a large brush. The best paint for cabinets is a two-step application process. One should start with a clear coat, typically latex, and apply a second coat, usually latex again, to keep the surface smooth and flat.

Of course, there are many more technical features of the best paint for cabinets. There are various types of additives for creating different effects, including sheen and gloss. There are special stain blocking solvents and mottoes for specific applications. It is best to learn about the technical features of various primers and then decide on the one that provides the best adhesion, durability and overall appearance.

A wide range of options is available to choose the right primer. A basic, water-based acrylic primer is used to provide a matte, non-glare finish on cabinets. These two coats of acrylic are meant to be sprayed directly on the surface and cured under pressure. Some cabinets may need only one coat, but some may require two coats because of the possibility of surface damage from the first coat penetrating. Also, if a two-coat application is necessary, it is always best to apply with a primer that has been specifically designed for surfaces like cabinets and other forms of glass.

A popular option is latex primer. Some prefer its ease of application and realistic appearance. However, those preferring a glossy, metallic or faux look must apply a two-coat latex application. It is important to note that applying thinner layers of latex will produce a sturdier, more natural looking result.

Oil-based and latex-based primers offer different advantages. Using an oil-based primer provides an easy way to paint the surface because of the finely powdered paint and its consistent appearance. The topcoat is applied directly and dries very fast. A latex-based topcoat dries slowly and needs a longer time between coats. A combination of the two gives the best blending and paint coverage.
