Self Defense Knives

In today’s society, there are more reasons than ever for people to carry self defense knives! From college students carrying concealed weapons in their backpacks, to women carrying pepper spray in their purses. Even law enforcement officers carry these valuable items. With all the reasons people use these tools, there is one very important reason that must be brought up: accidents can happen. And if you are unprepared when it happens, your personal safety could be severely affected.

For us, households, and groups. Guns are perhaps the most common self-defense tool many of consider at first glance. But they certainly aren’t always the safest option. A friend of mine recently was confronted by an armed assailant while out-of-town on vacation, far from his home.

Despite having a conceal carry license, he left his knife in his front pocket while he walked down the sidewalk. The assailant then bashed his head against the sidewalk, breaking his jaw and his teeth. Fortunately, another passerby witnessed the whole incident, and called the police. What would have been a near-death situation quickly turned deadly, as the armed assailant stabbed himself in the leg with the knife.

If you are thinking about buying a self defense fighting knife or any other type of knife, I have a question for you: How do you know the blade is serrated? Look for a model that says it has a serrated (two-edged) blade. It’s very rare for any tactical knife to come with a serrated edge; most blades are blunt, resulting from grinding against something hard or during a grind. Most serrated edged knives have a flat, dull blade. A blunt blade is much more dangerous and can’t be used in many types of fighting.

The next thing to look for when shopping for a self defense tactical knife is the blade length. Benchmade knives are generally shorter than “full-size” models, which are often times only a couple of inches long. However, even “short-bladed” models of Benchmade knives are typically longer than a standard size (if they’re within the category of “full-size”). If you’re shopping for a benchmade infidel, keep in mind that many models will be made of lightweight or medium carbon steel, which is nearly as tough as Teflon-coated stainless steel but doesn’t conduct heat well, making it less effective as a blade. If you are going to be a serious self defense practitioner, you want a full-sized benchmade knife that will be effective.

Another feature to consider is the sheath. It should be made from a strong and durable material that won’t bend or break easily, and it should be made by a company with a proven track record for high quality. I personally prefer Genoa, and their products consistently outlast those of other manufacturers. There’s no reason to settle for second best, so take time to check Genoa’s reputation and their selection of sheaths before placing your order.

One final thing to check before placing your order is what kind of handle material the knife has: serrated edges or not? Serrated edges are very effective as they can slice through most paper-thin layers of skin. Unfortunately, many makers have chosen to use a flat blade shape that cuts through just as effectively, and the resulting cuts can be painful if the sheath isn’t securely closed. My recommendation is to get a sheath that matches the overall size of the blade, but even then, you might opt for a different blade shape if you are a fan of the traditional open-draw style.

All in all, Self Defense Knives are great tools. If you are at all worried about your safety, you will be glad to know that the quality of the product matters more than any fancy design. I like to carry a Spyderco knife on my belt because of how comfortable it is to carry, the stability it offers, and the fact that it allows me to get work done without stopping to think about it. The Spyderco Crkt provoke did everything I asked of it, and performed admirably. If you’re looking for a good all around survival tool that performs well, looks great, and stays sharp, check out the Crkt Prox.
