Torque Wrench Versus Impact Wrench

 
A torque wrench is a mechanical device used to apply a certain torque to an automotive fastener, such as a bolt, nut, or lug. It’s usually made of a cast iron or steel body with a large drum with rolling or linear motion. In order to apply torque, you must rotate the drum while the body is fully extended. A standard torque wrench has a black rubberized wheel on one end and a non-rotating wrench.
 
Torque wrenches are commonly used for fastening a wide range of fasteners, including bolts, nuts, and washers. They are usually referred to as “torque” since they do best – apply torque. The most popular type of torque wrench in a typical vehicle configuration is the locking torque wrench, which is used for securing or loosening automotive bolts and is often mounted to the truck bed or trunk. For example, if you need to secure a bolt to a certain point and don’t want it to move, or if you want to increase the strength of your bolt or nut, a locking bolt wrench may be the right tool for the job.
 
When you’re tightening a bolt, it’s important to understand how the torque wrench works. Once you have the basic understanding, you can fine-tune your application by adding other indicators, such as a power cord or an oil bottle clip, which will indicate the proper amount of pressure to be applied. Here’s how a torque wrench works:
 
Torque wrenches come in two different types, one with a cord and one that has a power cord attached to the body. Cord wrenches are typically used to tighten bolts attached to the chassis or engine of a vehicle. Power cord wrenches are designed to be used with vehicle engines without an attached chassis. But did you know that each type of torque wrench has two different advancement methods? First, the straight-arm style is one of the most common types of torque wrench and is typically used to tighten nuts on flatwork. And then there is the deflecting beam style 1, which is also commonly used to tighten bolts on flatwork but also has an additional feature that may surprise you.
 
The deflecting beam style one torque wrench sometimes referred to as a laser bolt gun, uses a laser to project a beam that will penetrate the material being tightened. When this laser hits the surface area of the bolt, the surface tension of the material will cause the bolt to be propelled forward, even if it is a very heavy bolt. Thus, the bolt will move through the material without exerting much force, which gives the user the benefit of tightening bolts that are normally too hard to manage manually. This process takes less time than conventional hand tightening but can only be done with a properly calibrated torque wrench.
 
So which one is best for you? The answer lies in your applications. Suppose you’re a professional mechanic or do a lot of fastening; a straight-arm torque wrench may be your best option. On the other hand, if you just need to tighten some bolts occasionally, the deflecting beam-style wrench will likely be more efficient.
 
You may also want to consider an impact wrench. These fasteners use hydraulic pressure to increase the amount of thread lift, which loosens material. In addition to having a long arm like the deflecting beam style wrench, these fasteners are equipped with a safety face to prevent damaging machinery. Most impact wrenches have round tips for better accuracy, and they work best with semi-action bolts. Impact wrenches are more difficult to use than the previous types of wrenches discussed, and this is because of their increased level of accuracy. If you do not have any experience using torque wrenches, you may want to first consider one of the other types of fasteners before spending your money on an impact wrench.
