Choosing the Right Wood For Fireplace

Wood is the ideal choice to fuel a fireplace. It burns hotter and longer than any other material. Plus, it provides clean air in the house that can help people with respiratory problems. The problem, however, is that wood easily catches fire and can cause extensive damage. A wood burning stove can prove to be an expensive mistake, especially if you are not able to prevent it from happening in the first place.

To determine how much wood you should burn in your fireplace, you need to assess how much wood your house produces on a normal basis. If the amount of wood production is high, you can safely burn more logs in your fireplace. However, you should also consider the weather in your region. Logs produced in warm climates may rot easily. In colder environments, such as New England and the northern parts of the United States, the wood will freeze and crack. If you live in such a place where the temperature rarely dips below freezing point, you can safely burn log after log, provided that the fuel you use is readily available and the wood is not warped or damaged in any way.

When deciding between hardwood and softwood, the size of your fireplace also affects your decision. Hardwoods produce a hotter flame and are more likely to burn brightly for longer periods of time. If you are using softwood, however, you will get a more consistent heat output but are more likely to get a hot flash when you open the flue. This can be annoying, but is not likely to affect most people. In some cases, the temperature can be just right and the flame can go out when you open the flue a crack. That’s when softwood may be the best option for you.

Once you have decided on the type of wood to use for your fire, you should decide what sort of fuel to use. Logs burn cleaner and are less likely to leave soot or ash in your firebox. Softwoods, on the other hand, emit more smoke and ash and are more likely to drip or patter. There are exceptions to these rules, but softwoods are usually better for fireplaces.

Oak and maple are two of the most popular woods used for fire. Both have their benefits, and depending on your preferences, one or the other may work well for you. Both are harder than most woods and burn well. Maple, in particular, has a smooth, glossy grain and is very versatile.

Hardwood, as the name implies, is hard and dense and has a dense interior. It is the heaviest of all woods and some of the most stable, which makes it a good choice for firewood options. Hardwoods are durable and last for many years. The oak tree is a classic example of hardwood, and many homeowners opt for oak wood for their fireplaces because of its long-lasting durability.

If you are concerned about moisture content, it is important to note that most manufactured wood products do not come highly moistureated. This means that they will produce lots of soot and ash if you are using your fireplace frequently or for long periods. Manufactured wood can also easily split after some time and cause damage to your chimney or flue. This is why you should also inquire about the moisture content of the wood before you buy.

Softwoods, on the other hand, emit a more uniform heat output and burn cleaner. They are lighter than hardwoods but not by much. Since softwoods do not retain much of their water when they are burned, they do not produce soot or ash. With a less intense heat output, softwoods are a great choice if you want to save space in your fireplace and/or want to save money on your heating bill.
